From Vancouver, BC to St. John’s, NL

January is a touch busy, in a good way. The inaugural Vancouver Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival (!!!) runs from January 17-20. The festival features Australian composer and violist Brett Dean, but also includes a number of pieces by local composers including VSO Composer-in-Residence Edward Top, Jennifer Butler, and me.

I am very pleased to say that Aeromancy, my double cello concerto, will be performed by the VSO on January 18 – cello soloists are the glorious Ariel Barnes and Joseph Elworthy! The VSO will be conducted by maestro Bramwell Tovey, who is himself a composer, and was also a key founder of the renowned (and chilly) Winnipeg New Music Festival.

Here’s a bit of the score (or download aeromancy-2-excerpt-pdf), and a short sound excerpt of Aeromancy for the curious, and a link to a short article about the festival by Edward Top.

Note: Soundcloud is misbehaving somewhat today, so if the link above is not working, try the audio player below instead:

Later in the month (January 28-31) I am venturing off to St. John’s, Newfoundland for the Newfound XI Music Festival, where I’ll be their guest composer-in-residence. (Some info here and here re: the January 29 concert, more to follow.)

After that I go to Australia…long flight…
