Yes, concerts. (The “Wild Pile of Toast” is a frightening beverage, Swamp Water for the non-teetotaler.)
Monday and Tuesday, January 28 and 29, at 8pm, Music on Main presents Reich and Rite – the Canadian premiere of Steve Reich’s Piano Counterpoint, and a tour de force solo performance of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Both are being played by New York based pianist Vicky Chow. More info and ticket sales on the Music on Main website here, and two nifty articles about Vicky here and here (Vancouver Sun and Georgia Straight, by David Gordon Duke and Alex Varty, respectively.) If you’re planning to go, buy tickets soon – the Monday concert is 90% sold out, and Tuesday is also selling quickly.
Wednesday January 30th at noon – Gamelan Gita Asmara plays a raucous noon-hour show at UBC (recital hall, School of Music), featuring the world premiere of Michael Tenzer’s Sphinx with choreography by Justine Chambers. That’s all I can think of for now but I’m sure I’m missing lots! (If you’ve got a new-music concert in mind that I should add, let me know…)
